The Best Photography Podcasts

Photography related podcasts are a great source of learning and inspiration. The audio-only format of a podcast may seem at odds with a visual art such as photography, but in today's world of maximising time management it makes perfect sense.

With the ability to receive and learn information while driving, doing chores or even during editing sessions by having a podcast on in the background, it's no wonder podcasts are on the rise.

Join me, as I go through a quickfire list of some of the best photography podcasts available today, in no particular order.

The Photowalk

Topping off this list of photography podcasts is The Photowalk, a weekly show hosted and produced by Neale James. The Photowalk’s tagline is ‘stories of life, told by photographers’ - yet it is much more than that.

The hour-long episodes often follow Neale as he embarks on a photography walk in his local British countryside, complete with a camera, his dog and the ever essential Garibaldi biscuits. Guests either accompany him on the walk or are pre-recorded thought provoking interviews that blend in seamlessly with Neale’s interesting ramblings and mailbag readings.

Neale’s previous work as a radio broadcaster lends perfectly here as a podcast host. His confident, comforting, playful voice makes you feel at home in this podcast. The Photowalk has developed a real sense of community by including listeners' photo submissions and notes into the episodes, as well as the project challenges for everyone to get involved with.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

The host, Ben, might not be the most natural interviewer, but his knowledge, laid-back style and interesting guests make for a highly enjoyable listen.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers podcast format is, as the name suggests, heavily geared towards interviewing and conversing with photographers. It is a fantastic way to discover new photographers; quite often ones you haven’t heard of and may not have stumbled across, but whose work you wonder how you lived without seeing.

Don't be surprised if you end up on a Google binge after hearing a guest… and subsequently buying all of their photo books - it has happened to me numerous times.

B&H Photography Podcast

Some podcasts fall into the habit of rehashing the same subject matter and type of guests to the extent that each episode can be hard to separate from the next. B&H Photography Podcasts do not suffer from this problem. This is a podcast where every episode is unmissable, and whenever a new one pops up in my feed, I put it on without hesitation or reading the episode description - that sort of trust can’t be understated.

Each well produced episode dives deep into all areas of photography with carefully curated guests, exploring subjects such as AI, the birth of digital photography and marketing to name just a few. Their own podcast description sums it up perfectly - ‘From gear and technique to history, science and art, we discuss the topics most important to the contemporary photographer.’

Lens Shark Photography Podcast

If you prefer your photography podcasts in a bulletin news-like format, look no further than the Lens Shark Photography Podcast.

Lens Shark is a long running informative podcast with the latest bitesize news and stories in the photography world, covering the big stories alongside smaller ones that you might otherwise miss. Straight to the point with minimal ‘fluff’ or theatrics - much like this description.

Street Photography Magazine - Podcast

Produced by the magazine with the same name, and hosted by its publisher Bob Patterson, Street Photography Magazine is an interview-centric podcast specialising exclusively in street and documentary photography.

This podcast, like many others, sticks to a consistent formula that works - excellent guests interviewed in a very relaxed way. No bells, no whistles, just delving into the thoughts and processes of interesting photographers.

Again, similar to some others on this list, the Street Photography Magazine Podcast tempts you down the path to learn more about the guests by researching them further once the episode is over.

One refreshing thing to note here, is that there are no advertisements or sponsors to sit through, as is their intention - to stay objective. It’s refreshing to get straight into the interview on a podcast, with nothing more than a quick reminder to subscribe to their magazine.

FroKnowsPhoto Photography Podcasts

RAWtalk with Youtuber and photographer Jared Polin. This is as ‘marmite’ of a podcast you are likely to come across - that’s to say, you will either like it or not.

There is no denying that Jared’s brand works. His energetic personality on his Youtube channel has helped it grow into one of the most popular photography channels on the platform. As a podcaster Jared can truly converse (with his co host/staff member Stephen) as his raw, unfiltered and chaotic self - without damaging his Youtube statistics.

It could be argued that RAWtalk isn’t strictly a photography podcast, as quite often you will be listening to some extended diatribe or hearing about Jared’s weekly itinerary long before any useful photography discussion is made. The ego laden ramblings might be a lot of ‘fluff’ for a photography podcast, but no one can accuse it of being stale or boring. That’s one thing this podcast has over some others.

If you want a less reserved, high energy podcast, with unfiltered unapologetic opinions that will keep you entertained, check out RAWtalk.

Street Shots Photography Podcast

Listening to American duo Antonio and Ward is like sitting at a coffee table and hearing friends pour over their latest projects and thoughts - as many of us often do. Along the way they share tips and insights, with an almost philosophical perspective to the everyday world of being a photographer.

Occasionally a guest is brought onto the show to bring further expertise to one of the subjects of the day, and that makes for a welcome inclusion, without changing the overall format too much.

Antonio and Ward spare us the over-enthusiastic tones that some podcasts feel the need to project upon us, so if you’re looking for a relaxing late night listen, this could be the photography podcast for you.
