The Best Accessories For The Sony RX100

JJC HG-Rx100 Camera Cage and Grip

Easily the best accessory you can get for your Sony RX100. This cage protects the camera from knocks, allows you to attach it to a tripod, and has a hand grip all in a custom fit metal housing.

I tried a few cages and L brackets for the Sony RX100, and many of them were either a lousy fit, or didn't allow the battery door to be opened while it was attached.

I found this JJC one to be perfect and now it never leaves my camera. The extra size and weight it brings to a compact camera is well worth it, and it still fits comfortably in a pocket.

A popular alternative to improve ergonomics is a small official Sony stick on grip, but in my opinion that didn't feel good in the hand or look very good on the camera.

Peak Design Capture Clip

The Peak Design Capture Clip is an amazing bit of kit. By attaching the clip into the tripod thread, you can quickly attach the camera to wherever you have the supplied bracket. For most people that is a backpack strap or a belt loop, but I have mine attached to my wheelchair.

While the JJC grip mentioned above already uses the tripod thread on the camera, it handily provides another one on the bottom allowing you to attach the Capture Clip at the same time, and still allow access to the battery door.

The clip is also Arca-Swiss plate compatible, meaning you can attach it straight on to some tripods too. Peak Design products don’t come cheap, but it’s a product you can trust and the build quality is the best you can get. Besides, you can switch the clip out and use it on all your cameras.

Soft Shutter Release Button

The tiny shutter button on the RX100 sits flush with the body, making it a little hard to find sometimes. The easiest way to alleviate this issue is to stick a small soft shutter release button onto it. It also adds a splash of colour to an otherwise all black camera.

This is by far the cheapest yet most useful accessory you can buy for your compact Sony RX100 camera.

They are self adhesive, and so when the stickiness had finally perished on mine I went out shooting without it and missed the shutter constantly. I even pressed the nearby power button by accident a few times, and that’s the last thing you want to do when you have a fleeting shot lined up. Luckily they are very cheap and easy to replace.

Wrist Strap

One drawback to compact cameras, is that they are so small they don’t always feel safe or secure in your hand, even with a grip attached. I don’t know of any statistics, but I’d wager that compact cameras are dropped more than DSLR’s or bigger cameras. A wrist strap is a tried and tested fail safe that is sure to save your camera from ending up on the floor at least once in its lifetime.

For a camera as small as the Sony RX100, a smaller wrist strap pairs well with it. Be careful to get the right one as the attachment to feed the string into is very small, like that of a phone. Unfortunately it is too small for a Peak Design Anchor or standard camera wrist strap.

Consider buying one with some sort of wrist lock, so you can make the strap tight around your wrist to prevent it slipping off.

Magnetic Filter

Magnetic filters are a great way to expand the versatility of these cameras. A self adhesive ring is mounted onto the front of the lens allowing the filter adapter to magnetically snap on instantly. The one I have is by MAGFILTER but there are a few brands that do the same job. With mine I can attach any 58mm screw-in filter to the adapter and it works great when I want to add a CPL or stronger ND filter to my shot.

Retro Leather Case

If you don’t plan to use a grip or a Peak Design Capture Clip, then maybe you could consider a leather case and neck strap for a cool retro look.

These leather cases screw into the tripod adapter and so can't be used at the same time as the aforementioned, but they do offer some protection to the camera when it is around your neck. The neck strap is thin but with a camera this small and light it’s never an issue.

Screen protector

As with all cameras you’ve invested money into, it’s good practice to treat it to a screen protector.

This is especially true of the Sony RX100 and many other Sony cameras where the screen protector they put on is prone to micro scratches and starts to look very rough and worn over time. The original Sony one isn’t easy or intended to be removed, but with some careful peeling it came off and now with a third party screen protector my screen looks brand new again!

If your original screen protector is still in good condition, then it might be best to leave it on and maybe even put a third party one over it for extra security, as there are some people that say you lose some anti-glare properties once the original one is removed.
